Emails, social media posts and texts—the amount of data can be endless, creating potential problems for companies in industries large and small. A panel taking place on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at ALM’s LegalTech New York, entitled “Minimizing Cybersecurity and Litigation Risk While Optimizing the Benefits of Mobile Technology and Social Media in the Workplace,” examines the impact that today’s ever-expanding world of data is having on legal departments. (ALM is the parent company of Corporate Counsel.)

Sponsored by digital security company GWAVA Inc., the speakers include Christopher Colvin, founder of In The House (a networking group for in-house counsel), occasional contributor to CorpCounsel.com and shareholder at Colvin IP; Que Mangus, product marketing manager at GWAVA; Aryeh Friedman, chief privacy officer and assistant general counsel at Dun & Bradstreet; and Daniel B. Garrie, national partner at Law and Forensics and editor in chief at the Journal of Law & Cyber Warfare.

Colvin says the panel addresses the internal and external threats created by the “era of big data.”

“In the ’90s email became a factor in e-discovery. Since then the amount of electronic data that attorneys are dealing with has multiplied substantially,” he says. So the question the panel will take up is: “How do you manage litigation when sitting on a mountain of data?”

“Hacking in some sense has become a profession,” says Colvin. “People are now making a living stealing information or by finding a way to make companies pay for the misappropriated information.”

The panel begins at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. A complete list of LegalTech New York events is available here.
